Short answer: your old case probably won’t fit well. The new iPad mini Apple announced on October 26, 2026 is 2.2 mm narrower and 0.9 mm thinner than the 2024 model, so a cover built for the older tablet will sit loose, and the safest iPad mini 8 case is one made for this exact model.
One shopping tip before anything else. Apple does not call this tablet the eighth generation in its store. Its official label is iPad mini (A20 Pro), and that is the name to look for on any iPad mini 8 case listing, Apple’s own included. Pre-orders open October 28, it reaches stores on November 6, and pricing starts at $699 for Wi-Fi or $849 with cellular.
iPad mini 8 case fit: old model vs new, measured
Before you order an iPad mini 8 case, here is how the two tablets compare, using the figures on Apple’s iPad comparison page.
| Measurement | iPad mini (A17 Pro), 2024 | iPad mini (A20 Pro), 2026 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height | 195.4 mm | 195.3 mm | 0.1 mm shorter |
| Width | 134.8 mm | 132.6 mm | 2.2 mm narrower |
| Depth | 6.3 mm | 5.4 mm | 0.9 mm thinner |
| Weight (Wi-Fi) | 293 g | 255 g | 38 g lighter |
| Front camera | Short (portrait) edge | Long (landscape) edge | Moved |
Height barely changed, which is why the two look almost identical in photos. Width is the number that matters. A snap-on shell grips a tablet by its edges, and a couple of millimeters of slack across the short side is plenty for the corners to pop free or for the tablet to shift around inside.
The thinner body makes it worse. Lips designed to curl over the edge of the old glass will hover above the new screen instead of holding it, which is exactly where dust and grit like to collect.
Why the moved camera matters for an old cover
Apple now lists a Landscape 12MP Center Stage camera on the front, meaning it sits on the long side, where it lines up with your face during a video call with the tablet turned sideways. Folio covers that close over the whole screen don’t care much. Cases with a raised front frame or a camera notch were cut for the old spot, though, and that opening is now in the wrong place.
The back is less clear. Apple still lists a 12MP Wide rear camera, but it hasn’t published a drawing that shows whether the lens or flash moved. Until case makers measure real units, assume an older back cutout may not line up, and favor an iPad mini 8 case whose maker shows photos of the actual tablet inside it.
Speakers changed too. Apple describes the new setup as an Acoustic Display, with the speakers now hidden beneath the glass and enclosure, so the speaker openings molded into older cases no longer line up with anything.
Apple’s Smart Folio for the iPad mini (A20 Pro)
Apple’s own iPad mini 8 cover is a new Smart Folio for iPad mini (A20 Pro). It moves to Apple’s woven TechWoven fabric, costs $79, and comes in Navy Blue or Taupe to go with the Midnight and Starlight tablets. It uses a two-panel design that clings on with magnets and folds into several stand angles, and it can be ordered on the same day as the tablet.
Apple sells this folio under the A20 Pro name and hasn’t said the older polyurethane folio works with the new tablet. Given the narrower body and the relocated camera, we would not count on the old one lining up.
Does a water-resistant iPad still need an iPad mini 8 case?
The new iPad mini is rated IP67, which Apple defines as surviving a depth of up to 1 meter for as long as 30 minutes under the IEC 60529 standard. That helps with a spilled drink or rain on the patio. Apple also cautions that this kind of resistance can fade as the device wears.
None of that protects against a fall onto tile. A 255 g tablet slips out of a hand more easily than you’d think, and an OLED panel is not something you want to replace. Water resistance changes what you need an iPad mini 8 case for, not whether you need one.
Other iPad mini 8 accessories to check before you buy
- Apple Pencil. The new mini works with two pencils, Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Apple Pencil, along with hover. If you use the Pro model, choose a case that leaves the pencil room to attach magnetically.
- Keyboards. Apple doesn’t make a keyboard folio for the mini, and its comparison page simply lists support for Bluetooth keyboards. Any iPad mini 8 keyboard case will come from another brand.
- Chargers. The box holds a 20W adapter, but the quoted 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes needs an adapter rated 35W or higher, sold separately. A bulky case with a narrow port opening can also get in the way of thicker cables.
If you are coming from an older mini, our iPad Mini 6 vs. 7 comparison shows how little the outside changed between those two, which is why cases moved freely between them for years. The A20 Pro model breaks that habit.
Which iPad mini 8 case option suits you
Keep your current sleeve if it is a soft pouch the tablet slides into. A slightly smaller tablet still fits, and a snug grip was never the point.
Buy Apple’s Smart Folio if you want a thin cover on day one that is guaranteed to fit, and you mostly need screen protection and a stand.
Wait a few weeks for a third-party iPad mini 8 case if you want a rugged shell, a kickstand, a pencil holder or a keyboard. Look for listings that name the A20 Pro model or the 2026 release, not ones that say they fit the sixth and seventh generations, since those were built around the older 134.8 mm width.

Frequently asked questions about iPad mini cases
Will an iPad mini 7 case fit the iPad mini 8?
Not reliably. The new model is 2.2 mm narrower and 0.9 mm thinner, and its front camera moved to the long edge, so fitted shells and folios made for the A17 Pro model are likely to sit loose or misalign.
Is there an iPad mini 8 cover from Apple?
Yes. Apple sells a $79 Smart Folio for iPad mini (A20 Pro) in Navy Blue and Taupe, available to order alongside the tablet on October 28.
Does the iPad mini 8 work with Apple Pencil Pro?
Yes. Apple lists both Apple Pencil Pro and the USB-C Apple Pencil, including hover, so pick a case that leaves room for the Pro model to attach.
Should you reuse your old iPad mini case?
If it is a loose sleeve, keep it. If it is a fitted shell or an older Smart Folio, budget for a new iPad mini 8 case, either Apple’s $79 folio now or a third-party model once makers have real units to measure. Two millimeters doesn’t sound like much until your tablet slides out of its corners.
