Apple Music has been available inside ChatGPT since 17 December 2025. You can ask for music the way you’d describe it to a friend – “slow, rainy-day indie with female vocals, nothing from before 2015” – and ChatGPT searches Apple’s catalog, builds a playlist, and saves it to your library.
Most guides to this were written in the first few weeks and still describe screens that no longer exist. In July 2026 OpenAI replaced its App Directory with a Plugin Directory, and the menus changed with it. This guide covers the current setup.
What you need
| Without an Apple Music subscription | With a subscription | |
|---|---|---|
| Search the catalog | Yes | Yes |
| Get playlists and recommendations | Yes | Yes |
| Play preview clips | Yes | Yes |
| Save songs, albums and playlists to your library | No | Yes |
| Play full tracks | In the Music app, not in ChatGPT | In the Music app, not in ChatGPT |
It works on free and paid ChatGPT plans. OpenAI says app availability “depends on the app, your ChatGPT plan, region, workspace, role, model, and the ChatGPT interface you use”, so a work or school ChatGPT account may need an administrator to allow it. At launch, apps were not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Check your own account before assuming it’s there.
It works in the ChatGPT web app, the Mac app and the iPhone app.
How to connect Apple Music
[VERIFY ON DEVICE - labels vary by account; confirm and screenshot each step]
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Open Apps or Plugins – OpenAI says you’ll see one or the other depending on your account.
- Find Apple Music. Select Install plugin if it’s shown, then Connect.
- Sign in with your Apple Account and approve access.
Connections you made before July 2026 still work. OpenAI says existing app connections were unaffected by the change.
How to use it
Mention it with @Apple Music in your message, or select + and choose it. ChatGPT sometimes picks it on its own when you ask for music, but not reliably, so the @ mention is the dependable route.
Then describe what you want. Requests that work well:
- Mood and context: “40 minutes of focus music with no lyrics”
- Constraints a search box can’t handle: “jazz fusion under five minutes with a prominent saxophone”
- Anchored discovery: “ten songs that sound like early Arcade Fire but aren’t Arcade Fire”
- Refinement: “swap anything from the 2010s for something older” as a follow-up
Results come back as a track list. Use Create Playlist in Apple Music to save the whole thing, or the + next to a track to add songs one at a time. Long playlists may be split into groups. [VERIFY - confirm button label is unchanged since the plugin switch]
What ChatGPT can and can’t see
It can’t read your listening history, library or existing playlists. That’s also its biggest limitation: unlike some other music integrations, it can’t personalise recommendations from what you already play. Every request starts from scratch, so be specific.
It can act on your account once connected: create playlists, add to your library and add to Favorites. Since June 2026, ChatGPT lets you choose how much it may do without asking, from “Always ask” to “Allow all actions”. For something that writes to your music library, Always ask is a sensible setting.
Two general OpenAI notes apply to every app, not just Apple Music. Apps can receive your conversation context and approximate location. And on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, if “Improve the model” is on, that data may be used for training. You can turn that setting off.
Known problems
- In August 2026 a user reported the plugin’s save actions failing with an “Unknown tool” error. OpenAI didn’t respond publicly. If saving fails, disconnecting and reconnecting Apple Music is the obvious first step, though we haven’t confirmed it fixes the error.
- Preview clips only – full playback happens in the Music app.
The verdict
It’s the best way yet to turn a vague description into an actual playlist, and it’s free to try without a subscription. The blind spot is that it knows nothing about your taste. Treat it as a smart search, not a personal DJ.
