Why the week of September 14 is the expectation
Apple does not pick these dates at random. Since 2022 the major iOS release has landed on a Monday or Tuesday in the week following the September iPhone event, giving the company a few days between announcing hardware and pushing software to hundreds of millions of devices.

Four consecutive Monday releases, each in the second or third week of September. With the event on Wednesday, September 9, the Monday that follows is September 14. That is the whole basis for the prediction, and it is a pattern rather than a promise.
The date that would upset it is a hardware delay. If a headline product slips, Apple has occasionally staggered the software to match. Nothing currently suggests that this year.
What happens at the September 9 event
Apple sent invitations on August 26 for an event branded “Surprise and shine.” The iPhone 18 Pro is the expected centrepiece, alongside a foldable model reported as iPhone Ultra, and MacRumors counts as many as six new products across the announcement.
For anyone tracking the software, the relevant moment is usually a single line on a slide near the end of the keynote: the date iOS 27 becomes available. That is when a prediction becomes a fact. We will update this page within minutes of it appearing.
The release candidate comes first
Before the public release, Apple ships a release candidate to developers and public beta testers, normally during event week. The RC matters more than its name suggests: in almost every recent cycle it has been byte-identical to the version that ships to everyone.
If you are on the beta and the RC arrives, you are effectively already on the finished release. If you are not testing, the RC’s arrival is your signal that the public update is roughly a week out.
Will your iPhone get iOS 27?
Almost certainly. Apple dropped nothing this year: every iPhone capable of running iOS 26 is on the iOS 27 list, which means iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. The floor is an A13 Bionic chip.
That is unusually generous, and it is worth separating from a second question that trips people up.
Getting iOS 27 is not the same as getting Siri AI
The headline feature of this release is the rebuilt, generative-AI Siri. Two things gate it, and neither is the release date.
First, hardware. Apple Intelligence requires an A17 Pro chip or newer with 8GB of RAM, so iPhone 15 Pro and later. An iPhone 11 will install iOS 27 on day one and get the speed improvements, but none of the Siri work. Custom Siri voices need 12GB, narrowing that further to iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Second, and less widely understood, Siri AI launches behind a waitlist. Each device has to pull down more than 10GB of on-device model data, and most requests route through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, so Apple is releasing access in waves rather than all at once. Beta testers reported waits of around a week.
The practical consequence: release day is when you can install iOS 27. It is not necessarily when you can use the feature you updated for.
What to do before update day
- Back up properly. An encrypted archived backup to a Mac or PC, not just iCloud. If anything goes wrong, an archived backup is the only version you can restore from cleanly.
- Check your storage. Major iOS updates want several gigabytes free, and Siri AI’s model download needs 10GB more on top once your turn in the queue arrives.
- Wait a day if you rely on your phone for work. Day-one point releases are common, and third-party apps often need a few days to catch up.
- Do not rush the update to get Siri. Given the waitlist, updating at 10am on release day and updating that evening will likely land you in much the same queue.
