You finally bought that short, tidy domain with your family name on it. The plan was simple: a proper address for everyone at home instead of a mix of old Gmail and Hotmail accounts. If you pay for iCloud+, you already have most of what you need, and the iCloud custom email domain setup takes about as long as making coffee, minus the waiting on DNS.
The timing is better now, too. Apple’s support documentation now lists up to 10 personalized email addresses per domain, while Apple’s own iCloud.com setup guide still describes a limit of three per person. That is enough room for a work address, a shopping address and a few spares without juggling.
What you need for iCloud custom email domain setup
Custom Email Domain is an iCloud+ feature, so the free 5GB iCloud plan will not cut it. Apple lists these requirements:
- An active iCloud+ subscription
- An Apple Account with two-factor authentication turned on
- A primary iCloud Mail address already set up
- A domain you own, or a plan to buy one during setup (you must be 18 or older to buy one)
Apple also notes that Custom Email Domain is not available in every country or region, and it does not support managed Apple Accounts, such as the ones schools and some companies hand out.
iCloud custom email domain limits at a glance
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| Custom domains per account | Up to 5 |
| Personalized addresses per domain | Up to 10 |
| People you can share a domain with | Up to 5 others |
| Addresses for each person you share with | Up to 10 |
One catch to plan for during iCloud custom email domain setup: you cannot reuse an address that is already tied to a different Apple Account. If an old address is attached to someone else’s account, it has to be removed there first.
How to set up a domain you already own on iCloud.com
This route to iCloud custom email domain setup works from any browser, including on a Windows PC, which is handy because the DNS part is easier on a big screen.
- Go to icloud.com/icloudplus and sign in.
- Open the app launcher and choose Custom Email Domain.
- Choose Add a domain you own.
- Pick who will use it: Only You or You and Other People.
- Type your domain name and select Continue.
- Add anyone you are sharing with, plus any addresses you already use on that domain, then select Add email address(es). Apple sends a confirmation email to each address.
- Select View, then update your DNS records, either automatically through your registrar or by copying the records in by hand.
- Select Finish setup and choose which address mail is sent from by default.
At the end of the iCloud custom email domain setup, Apple offers to import mail from your old provider. Check your iCloud storage first. A decade of newsletters adds up faster than you think.
How to buy a new domain from your iPhone
No domain yet? You can buy one without leaving Settings on iOS 16 or later. Apple’s purchase guide lays out the path:
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.
- Under Saved to iCloud, tap Mail.
- Tap Custom Email Domain, then Continue.
- Tap Buy a Domain (or Buy a New Domain).
- Enter the name you want, tap Search, and review the options and prices.
- Choose a domain, tap Next, and finish the purchase.
The domain is sold by a third-party registrar, not by Apple. That matters later: billing questions and refunds go to the registrar, so keep that receipt somewhere you will find it.
Sharing the domain with family
Once your iCloud custom email domain setup is done, Family Sharing members are included automatically when you choose to share. On iOS 16 and later you can also share the domain with people outside your family, up to five others in total, and each of them can have up to 10 addresses of their own. If you have wondered what else family members can see, our guide on whether Family Sharing can see your iCloud files covers the privacy side.
One quirk to know about: anyone still on iOS 15 may not see every address created on an iOS 16 or later device. If a relative swears their new address is missing, check their software version before anything else.
Where your new address works
Once your iCloud custom email domain setup is finished, the address is not limited to email. Apple says personalized addresses work in Mail, Messages, FaceTime and Calendar, and you can even use one to sign in on your devices. It shows up in the Mail app on every device signed in to your Apple Account, and on iCloud.com. For more on what the Mail app itself can do, see our look at recent iCloud Mail features.
Frequently asked questions
Is iCloud custom email domain free?
Not entirely. The feature is included with an iCloud+ subscription, but if you buy a new domain it is sold by a third-party registrar at its own price.
Why is my iCloud custom email domain not working?
The most common reason is unfinished DNS setup. Go back to Custom Email Domain on iCloud.com, select View and check that your registrar has every record Apple lists, then confirm each address from its verification email.
Can I use an iCloud custom email domain for business?
Apple does not support managed Apple Accounts for this feature, so it is built for personal and family use. Apple does not describe any team admin tools for it.
Should you set up a custom email domain?
If you already pay for iCloud+ and own a domain, iCloud custom email domain setup is an easy win, and the room for 10 addresses per domain makes it practical for a whole household. Skip it if you need team admin controls or live somewhere it is not offered. For everyone else, it is the cheapest upgrade to your email you will make this year: same inbox, better name on the door.
