Until this week, Spotify audiobooks were a perk for listeners in just 22 markets. By the end of 2026 they will reach more than 180, which means a wave of new subscribers is about to learn what longtime users already know: Spotify audiobooks listening hours run on a monthly meter, not an open buffet.
Spotify announced the expansion on October 7 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In the newly added Premium countries, among them Spain, Italy, Brazil, Mexico and Poland, eligible subscribers get 12 hours of audiobook listening a month with no extra charge. The catch is in how those hours get counted, and that is where most of the confusion starts.
The short answer on Spotify audiobooks listening hours
Your plan hands you a fixed allowance every billing cycle. Each book you stream from the subscriber catalog chips away at it, and once it reaches zero you have three choices: wait for the reset, pay for extra time, or buy the book outright. Leftover time disappears at the end of the cycle.
Spotify says people in the new markets can pick from more than 350,000 titles across more than 120 languages, with fresh Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Polish catalogs in the mix. Twelve hours can vanish inside one long novel, so the details below matter.
How the clock counts your time
This is where Spotify audiobooks listening hours catch people out. Spotify’s support page on audiobooks in Premium explains that time comes off based on how long the book runs at normal speed, not on the minutes you spend with your earbuds in.
- Faster playback does not save time. In Spotify’s own example, a 5-hour book played at 2x still costs 5 hours, even though you are done in two and a half.
- Replays are charged again. Start that same book over from the top and another 5 hours come off your balance.
- Purchased titles sit outside the meter. A book you have bought on its own never touches the allowance.
- The count can run late. Pausing halfway through a chapter, or staying offline for a long stretch, can delay how quickly your balance updates.
Your Spotify audiobooks listening hours refill when each new billing cycle begins. Unused or expired time is not refunded, so there is no prize for saving it.
How to check your Spotify audiobooks listening hours
The iPhone app tucks the number a few screens deep:
- Tap your profile picture in the Spotify app.
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Tap Account, then the name of your plan.
- Open Audiobook listening time to see what is left and the date it renews.
On a Mac or PC, sign in to your Spotify account in a browser and look for the Audiobook listening time page instead.
Which plans include audiobook time
Whether you get any Spotify audiobooks listening hours at all depends on your plan, and on shared plans only one person gets them.
| Plan | Audiobook time included | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Individual | Yes | 12 hours a month in the newly added countries |
| Premium Family | Plan manager only | Members can get 15 hours a month through a recurring add-on |
| Premium Duo | Plan manager only | Same member add-on as Family |
| Premium Student | None | Audiobooks+ comes to Ireland, Belgium, Austria and Finland in November |
The family rule is the one to remember. Members cannot borrow from the manager’s pool, so a house with two keen listeners will run dry quickly unless the manager pays for a separate allowance for the second person. Spotify says it wants to bring the Student add-on to more countries over the coming year.
Top-ups vs Audiobooks+ when you run out
Once your Spotify audiobooks listening hours are used up, there are two ways to buy more, and they work quite differently.
- Top-ups are single purchases that only start counting once your plan time is gone. Each one is good for 12 months, and you can buy more than one. If you cancel Premium you lose access to them until you come back, and the original expiry date keeps running in the meantime.
- Audiobooks+ is a monthly add-on that renews automatically. One version is for your own account, while Audiobooks+ for Plan Members lets a Family or Duo manager buy hours for the others. These hours are used after your plan time, and you can cancel whenever you like.
- Buying a title is the third path. You keep the book, and it never draws on any allowance.
Spotify has not shared a single global price for any of these, saying only that pricing and access differ from country to country. Check the app where you live before signing up. In parts of Africa and Asia, as well as Argentina, Audiobooks+ is the main way to get audiobooks at all. Spotify pricing has been a sore point for a while, as we noted when Apple Music took aim at Spotify’s latest price increase.
Why Spotify is taking audiobooks worldwide
Growth is the obvious reason. Spotify reports that monthly audiobook listeners rose almost 40% in the past year while total listening time grew by more than 30%. Audiobooks+, barely a year old, now has more than one million subscribers and over $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
Books change how we see the world, and the people in it.
Owen Smith, VP of Audiobooks, Spotify
Spotify first folded audiobooks into Premium three years ago, and the company has experimented with plans that leave them out entirely, such as the $10.99 ad-free music plan with no audiobooks. Its publishing deals are non-exclusive, so authors can still sell the same books elsewhere. Full details are in Spotify’s announcement.
Page Match can now scan a barcode
Page Match arrived in February 2026 to let readers hop between a paper copy, an e-book and the audio edition of the same title, and Spotify says over a million people have tried it. With this update you can point your iPhone camera at the ISBN barcode on a physical book, enter the page you are on, and carry on from that spot in the audiobook. It supports more than 30 languages.
Common misconceptions about audiobook time
- Spotify audiobooks listening hours are not a stopwatch. They measure the length of what you play at normal speed, so 2x listening gives you no bonus.
- A Family plan does not mean family hours. The manager is the only member with included time.
- Student Premium has no hours built in. The paid add-on is coming to four countries first, starting in November.
Frequently asked questions about Spotify audiobook time
Do unused Spotify audiobook hours roll over?
No. Spotify audiobooks listening hours refill at the start of each billing cycle, and anything left from the previous cycle expires without a refund.
Can you buy more audiobook hours on Spotify?
Yes. You can buy one-time top-ups that last 12 months or add the monthly Audiobooks+ add-on, and prices vary by country.
What happens when Spotify audiobook time runs out mid-chapter?
The app lets you know and offers ways to add time. Your place is saved, but the subscriber catalog stays locked until you get more hours.
Should you pay for more audiobook time on Spotify?
If you get through one book a month, the included allowance should cover you, and Audiobooks+ would mostly buy hours you never touch. Heavy listeners, households with more than one reader and anyone who loves a reread should track their Spotify audiobooks listening hours for a full cycle before paying for extra. Think of it as a library card with a time limit: generous right up until you start a ten-book series.
