Your original HomePod mini still sits on the kitchen counter, handling timers, the morning news and the odd song while you cook. Then Apple announces a successor, and the HomePod mini 2 vs 1 question lands on your counter too: is the new one different enough to replace a speaker that still works fine?
Apple revealed the HomePod mini 2 on October 13, 2026. It costs $149 in the U.S., pre-orders are open now, and stores get stock on Friday, October 30. The outside barely changed. The inside, the wireless radios and the software story changed a lot more.
HomePod mini 2 vs 1 at a glance

Both use one full-range driver with two passive radiators and a waveguide that throws sound in a full circle. So the basic acoustic recipe is familiar. What Apple is selling this time is the brain behind it and how the speaker fits into the rest of your Apple gear.
What the HomePod mini 2nd gen actually adds
A much newer chip. In any HomePod mini 2 vs 1 debate, the jump from the S5 to the S10 is the headline. Apple pairs the S10 with computational audio that studies a track as it plays and adjusts loudness and dynamic range on the fly. Apple did not publish any louder-or-deeper percentages against the first model, so treat the sound upgrade as promising but unmeasured.
Modern wireless. The 2020 speaker uses 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. The new one moves to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6. On a busy home network, that newer Wi-Fi is the HomePod mini 2 vs 1 difference you are most likely to feel day to day.
Sound Glow. The top panel now lights up and pulses along with your music, borrowing colors from the album art. You can control it by voice, but only with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence.
A speaker for your Mac. The new model can act as the default speaker for a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Apple does not mention this for the older model.
New colors. Pink and green join white, blue and midnight. Orange, yellow and space gray are not part of the new lineup.
Siri AI and the HomePod mini 2 vs 1 software gap
Siri AI is the feature Apple leans on hardest, and it is also where the HomePod mini 2 vs 1 picture is least clear. Siri AI is coming in a later software update, not on day one, and will start in English in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.
Once it arrives, it can tell up to six people in a home apart by their voices, as long as the speaker is paired with an iPhone or iPad that runs Apple Intelligence. It still works without one, just with fewer personal features. Apple also warns that some server-based features carry daily caps, and that wider access will cost money later.
The open question for owners of the first model: Apple’s announcement only talks about Siri AI on “a supported HomePod mini speaker” and never says which ones qualify. Until Apple lists supported models, do not count on the 2020 speaker getting it.
The home theater catch for Apple TV owners
Apple also introduced a new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) the same day. It can drive four-speaker surround sound, with two speakers up front and two behind you. Apple names only two speakers for that setup: the HomePod mini 2 and the HomePod (2nd generation), used in matching front and rear pairs.
This is where HomePod mini 2 vs 1 stops being a close call, especially if you were hoping to reuse a pair of older minis as rear speakers. Based on what Apple has published, the first-generation model is not part of that setup. A full four-speaker system means buying four of the new speakers, or four second-generation HomePods.
What stays the same on both speakers
- The same footprint, at 84.3 mm tall and 97.9 mm wide, so it drops into the same spot on a shelf.
- A Thread radio for HomeKit and Matter accessories, plus a U1 chip that senses when a compatible iPhone is close by.
- Built-in temperature and humidity sensing.
- Stereo pairing with a second speaker.
- A 20W power adapter.
Smart home features such as smoke and carbon monoxide alarm alerts and doorbell visitor announcements appear in Apple’s pitch for the new model. Apple itself says the alarm listening should not be relied on in an emergency, and the visitor announcements need HomeKit Secure Video with Face Recognition switched on.
HomePod mini 2 price and release date
On price, HomePod mini 2 vs 1 is $149 against the $99 the first model cost at its 2020 launch, a $50 gap. Pre-orders opened on October 13 in the U.S. and over 23 other countries and regions, and it reaches stores on Friday, October 30. It ships with HomePod software 27.2. You can read Apple’s full HomePod mini 2 announcement for regional details.
Pick the HomePod mini 2 if…
