Apple’s Ultra-Thin Design Revolution: MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, and iPhone to Follow iPad Pro’s Lead

Apple is set to redefine the design of its product lineup, focusing on ultra-thin devices, as evidenced by the recent unveiling of the ultra-thin M4 iPad Pro. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this marks the beginning of a new design trajectory for Apple, with plans to slim down the MacBook Pro, Apple Watch, and iPhone over the next few years.

iPod Nano vs. iPad Pro: A Design Evolution

When the M4 iPad Pro was unveiled last month, Apple highlighted its incredibly slim design by comparing it to the 2012 iPod nano. This comparison emphasizes that the new iPad Pro is the company’s thinnest product ever, showcasing Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of device thinness. The 2012 iPod nano was a breakthrough in compact design, and the M4 iPad Pro continues this legacy by offering a sleek, lightweight profile while maintaining robust functionality.

Power On Newsletter Insights

Writing in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman elaborates on Apple’s design philosophy. He explains that, similar to the iPad Pro, Apple is now focused on delivering the thinnest possible devices across its product lineups without compromising on battery life or major new features. This shift towards ultra-thin designs is not just about aesthetics; it represents a significant technological advancement in maintaining performance and battery efficiency in increasingly compact devices.

New Class of Apple Devices

Gurman describes the new iPad Pro as the “beginning of a new class of Apple devices,” aimed at offering “the thinnest and lightest products in their categories across the whole tech industry.” Apple is reportedly working on significantly slimming down the iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro in the coming years. This new class of devices will set a benchmark in the industry, challenging competitors to innovate and match Apple’s design prowess.

Upcoming Thinner Devices

According to Gurman’s sources:

  1. iPhone: Apple is developing a much thinner iPhone for the iPhone 17 line, expected in 2025. This new model will feature a “major redesign” similar to the impact of the iPhone X. The iPhone X was a game-changer with its edge-to-edge display and Face ID technology, and the iPhone 17 aims to replicate that level of innovation with a slimmer profile and potentially new groundbreaking features.
  2. Apple Watch: The upcoming Apple Watch will undergo a complete revamp for its tenth anniversary, potentially named Apple Watch X. While it’s unclear whether this will be released in 2024 or 2025, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims this year’s Apple Watch will have a larger screen and thinner design. This suggests a significant overhaul that aligns with Apple’s focus on creating lighter, more comfortable wearables without compromising on functionality.
  3. MacBook Pro: Apple redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2021, making it thicker to reintroduce several ports. However, the focus is now shifting back to achieving a thinner design for future models. The 2021 redesign was well-received for its balance of functionality and form, but Apple’s ongoing pursuit of thinner laptops indicates a commitment to refining the user experience through more portable and aesthetically pleasing devices.

Design and Features

Despite the emphasis on thinness, Apple is committed to maintaining high standards for battery life and core features. The company’s innovative approach ensures that even as devices become slimmer, they will continue to deliver robust performance and functionality. Apple’s engineering teams are likely focusing on advancements in battery technology, materials science, and component miniaturization to achieve these design goals.

MacReview verdict

Apple’s new design trajectory, as indicated by the ultra-thin M4 iPad Pro, marks the beginning of a significant transformation in the tech industry. With plans to introduce thinner versions of the iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro, Apple is set to lead the way in delivering sleek, lightweight devices without sacrificing performance. This design revolution is poised to set new standards in the tech world, highlighting Apple’s role as an innovator and trendsetter.
