As of November 3, 2026, Apple counts 16 Apple Wallet ID states, plus Puerto Rico, and its own page adds a small promise: “with more on the way.” Virginia joined on August 26 and Oklahoma followed on September 2, so the list has moved faster this year than most iPhone owners may realize.
The next names look fairly clear too. Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina are the likeliest additions, though only North Carolina has a current official timeline. If your state is missing, you still have one useful option at the airport.
The current Apple Wallet ID states, in one list
Apple’s participating list is the only one that decides whether your state shows up in the Wallet app. Today it reads:
| A to H | I to N | O to W |
|---|---|---|
| Arizona | Illinois | Ohio |
| Arkansas | Iowa | Oklahoma |
| California | Maryland | Puerto Rico (territory) |
| Colorado | Montana | Virginia |
| Georgia | New Mexico | West Virginia |
| Hawaii | North Dakota |
Several big names are missing from the Apple Wallet ID states, including Texas, New York, New Jersey and Michigan. Florida is a different case: its governor has argued against digital licenses outright, so nobody should expect it soon.
Which states look likely to join next
Apple publishes no upcoming list, so the next round of Apple Wallet ID states has to be pieced together from state agencies and Apple’s systems. The three strongest candidates sit at very different stages.
| State | What is known | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Utah | Reported Utah references in Apple’s systems | No date |
| Kentucky | State says it is working with Apple, Google and Samsung | Expected after KINDL, the new licensing system that launched in June 2026 |
| North Carolina | State mobile ID starts in its own NC Wallet app | Apple Wallet expected in 2027 |
Utah. Traces of a Utah ID have appeared in Apple’s backend, according to a report from MacRumors. The same kind of clue pointed to Virginia and Oklahoma before they went live, which makes this a decent sign, not a promise.
Kentucky. Residents already have a separate Kentucky Mobile ID app for TSA lanes. The state has said Wallet support depends on KINDL, its replacement driver licensing system, and Apple’s list does not show Kentucky yet.
North Carolina. Here the wording is official. The NCDMV mobile ID page says NC Wallet comes first because the Apple, Google and Samsung versions need their own approval processes, and it expects those in 2027. It also promises no extra fee for license holders.
What to do if you live in a listed state
Setup is short if your phone qualifies. You need an iPhone 8 or newer (or Apple Watch Series 4 or newer) on current software, Face ID or Touch ID, two-factor authentication on your Apple Account, and a device region of United States. Two places ask for more: California and Puerto Rico both need at least an iPhone XS.
- Open Wallet and tap the Add Card button.
- Pick Driver’s License or ID Cards, then your state.
- Decide between iPhone alone or iPhone plus paired Apple Watch.
- Scan both sides of the card somewhere bright, against a plain background.
- Take the selfie or Live Photo, and follow any head movements requested.
- Send it off with Face ID or Touch ID, then wait for your state’s answer.
That last step matters, since your motor vehicle agency approves or rejects the request, not Apple. A rejected scan is a question for the state. Each license can live on one iPhone and one Watch per Apple Account.
What we still don’t know
We have seen no launch date for Utah or Kentucky. Making the list of Apple Wallet ID states also says little about where you can use the ID. Apple calls acceptance “select” at airports and businesses, so read the signs at the checkpoint before you put your plastic card away. Apple is clear that a phone ID does not replace the physical one, which police may still request, and carrying both stays the sensible habit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Texas one of the Apple Wallet ID states?
No. Texas is not on Apple’s participating list as of November 3, 2026, so the option will not appear in Wallet.
Can I add a driver’s license to Apple Wallet in Canada or the UK?
No. The feature covers select U.S. states and territories only, and Apple requires a device region of United States.
Which iPhone do I need for an Apple Wallet ID?
An iPhone 8 or later works in most listed states. California and Puerto Rico require an iPhone XS or later.
Should you wait for your state or use a passport ID?
If you live in one of the Apple Wallet ID states, add your license now and save yourself a fumble at the checkpoint. If you fly often from anywhere else, set up Apple’s passport-based Digital ID, which came with iOS 26.1 and needs no state’s cooperation, just a valid U.S. passport. Everyone else can skip it, keep watching the list, and read our guide to digital driver’s licenses for the background. Your wallet has a little more time to enjoy being necessary.
