Apple has officially opened its redesigned Sainte-Catherine retail location in downtown Montréal, Canada, marking a significant expansion of the company’s presence in the city. The new store occupies a historic building at the corner of Rue Saint-Catherine and Rue de la Montagne, offering more than double the space of its predecessor and blending heritage architecture with Apple’s modern retail design philosophy.
A Historic Building Reimagined
The new Apple Sainte-Catherine store spans the ground floor of an extensively renovated historic building, with the second and third floors reserved for Apple staff. The company worked with local artisans to preserve the building’s heritage character while adapting it for modern retail use.
According to Apple, the store’s façade combines historic Saint-Marc stone sourced from Québec with local granite. Copper artisans from the region were brought in to restore the cornice that tops the building, demonstrating Apple’s commitment to preserving local architectural heritage while implementing its retail vision.
Interior Design and Customer Experience
While the interior follows Apple’s familiar retail template, several unique design elements distinguish this location. The entrance and curved wood ceiling add architectural interest, creating a space that balances consistency with local character.
The expanded footprint accommodates side-by-side counters for the Genius Bar and Apple Pickup services. Customers can receive technical support or collect items ordered through Apple’s online store at dedicated stations, streamlining the in-store experience.
Opening Day Celebrations
First-time visitors to the new location received complimentary items appropriate for Montréal’s winter climate. Apple distributed tote bags and toques (the Canadian term for winter knit hats) to early customers, a thoughtful gesture given temperatures hovering around -15°C (5°F) during the opening.
The company created custom Mac and iPhone wallpapers to commemorate the store opening, available through Apple’s retail website. Additionally, customers making purchases on January 17 between 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. local time can receive a special shopping bag featuring artwork by Montréal-based artist Catherine Potvin.
Apple’s retail chief Deirdre O’Brien attended the grand opening, underscoring the company’s emphasis on this location within its global retail network.
Replacing the Original Location
The new Sainte-Catherine store replaces Apple’s original location on the same street, which has now permanently closed. The move provides significantly more retail space and improved customer facilities, reflecting both increased demand and Apple’s evolving retail standards.
With more than twice the square footage of its predecessor, the new store can accommodate larger crowds, host more Today at Apple sessions, and provide enhanced service capabilities through expanded Genius Bar facilities.
