iOS 18.1 Now Available: What’s New in Apple’s Update

Apple has officially released iOS 18.1 after an extensive beta phase, marking a significant step forward in the iPhone user experience. This update introduces Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI-driven tools designed to enhance productivity and personalization across various apps. Users will also notice a redesigned Siri interface, powerful new tools in the Photos app, and more intuitive notification management. Let’s explore what iOS 18.1 has to offer.

iOS 18.1 Compatibility and Update Details

iOS 18.1 is compatible with all devices that currently support iOS 18, though some Apple Intelligence features are exclusive to newer iPhone models, including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. To install iOS 18.1, users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update. The build number for this release is 22B83.

Apple Intelligence Features

Writing Tools

One of the standout features in iOS 18.1, Writing Tools integrates smart editing into nearly every app. Whether drafting an email, taking notes, or messaging, users can now instantly rewrite, proofread, or adjust the tone of any text with just a few taps. Available options include Rewrite, Proofread, Make Friendly, Make Professional, Summarize, Create Key Points, Make List, and Make Table. These tools can be accessed by highlighting text and selecting “Writing Tools” from the menu, or through a dedicated toolbar button in the Notes app.

Reduce Interruptions Mode

Reduce Interruptions is a new Focus mode powered by Apple Intelligence that selectively silences non-urgent notifications while allowing priority alerts to get through. For example, it will display important notifications—like a text about an early pickup—while silencing less urgent messages. Users can customize which apps and contacts are allowed through, ensuring a personalized experience.

Photos App Enhancements

Clean Up Tool

A major new feature in the Photos app, Clean Up allows users to remove distracting objects or people from photos with a single tap. By highlighting unwanted elements, Clean Up automatically removes them, leaving behind a polished image. Apple Intelligence also suggests elements it identifies as potentially distracting, simplifying the editing process.

Memory Movies Creation

iOS 18.1 introduces the ability to create memory movies based on simple descriptions. Users can enter a description, and Apple Intelligence will select relevant photos and videos, organizing them into chapters and building a storyline that’s both cohesive and meaningful.

Enhanced Search in Photos and Videos

Natural language search now enables users to find photos based on descriptions, like “sunset at the beach” or “birthday party,” making it easier to locate specific moments. This feature extends to video content, allowing users to search within clips and jump directly to the relevant scenes.

Siri Redesign and Improved Capabilities

New Interface

In iOS 18.1, Siri sports a refreshed look with a glowing light that wraps around the screen’s edge whenever Siri is active, providing a sleek and responsive visual cue.

Switching Between Text and Voice

Users can now seamlessly toggle between text and voice input by double-tapping the home indicator, making it easy to choose their preferred way to interact with Siri.

Enhanced Context and Interruption Handling

With enhanced language understanding, Siri can now maintain context through a conversation, allowing users to refine their requests without starting over. Siri has also improved at handling interruptions, accommodating users who change or clarify requests mid-sentence. Additionally, Siri can now provide detailed responses to questions about Apple products, drawing from Apple’s comprehensive support documentation.

Mail App Updates

Priority Messages and Smart Reply

The new Priority Messages section in the Mail app highlights time-sensitive emails—such as boarding passes or calendar invites—making it easy to stay on top of critical messages. Meanwhile, Smart Reply offers suggested responses, streamlining email replies and helping users quickly address questions.

Summarize Feature

For lengthy emails, the new Summarize button condenses content into key points, allowing users to grasp important details without reading the entire message. This feature saves time and ensures users don’t overlook important information.

Notification and Transcription Summaries

Apple Intelligence Notification Summaries

Notification Summaries now offer an overview of incoming messages, prioritizing the most relevant details. Users can review notifications without tapping into each one individually, making it easier to stay organized.

Transcription Summaries in Notes

Users can now get transcription summaries of audio recordings in the Notes app. This feature condenses recorded content—whether it’s a phone call or a meeting—into a concise summary, helping users locate key points quickly.

Additional iOS 18.1 Highlights

Alongside Apple Intelligence features, iOS 18.1 includes several functional updates and quality-of-life improvements. Control Center upgrades allow users to add individual connectivity controls and reset configurations. iPhone 16 models now offer quick switching to the front camera with Camera Control for better user convenience. For the first time, iOS 18.1 opens up iPhone’s NFC chip to third-party developers, paving the way for expanded app integrations. Enhanced Mirroring adds drag-and-drop support, while TikTok and Apple Music integration allows users to link accounts for seamless music sharing. Call recording and transcriptions support live call recording with transcriptions available in Notes for easy reference.

With Writing Tools, new Photos features, and Siri’s refined design, Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1 redefines productivity and customization on the iPhone. From streamlining email replies in the Mail app to making notifications more manageable with summaries, iOS 18.1 highlights Apple’s focus on user-centric design and smart customization. This update marks another step forward in Apple’s innovation, setting the stage for an even more interconnected and intelligent user experience in future releases.
