What’s New and What’s Next for Siri With Apple Intelligence

With the launch of iOS 18.1, Apple has introduced an updated look for Siri as part of its Apple Intelligence rollout. For users with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16, Siri now has a refreshed design featuring a sleek, edge-lit animation that adapts to your voice. While this new visual update is a welcome change, Siri’s intelligence and capabilities remain mostly the same—for now. Here’s an in-depth look at what’s new with Siri, what improvements are on the horizon, and when users can expect more meaningful enhancements.

A New Look for Siri: Visual and Functional Updates in iOS 18.1

The primary update to Siri in iOS 18.1 focuses on a new design, offering an edge-lit animation that responds to voice. This visual change adds a modern look, making Siri feel more interactive and dynamic. However, this is largely a cosmetic update, and Siri’s intelligence remains consistent with previous versions. For users on older devices without Apple Intelligence activated, Siri retains its previous orb-like design.

In addition to the new look, Apple has introduced a few functional changes:

  • Type to Siri with Ease: A new option allows users to double-tap on the home indicator to open Siri with a keyboard interface, making it easier to type queries in quiet environments. This addition, while practical, may create expectations of Siri functioning like a chatbot, which it currently does not.
  • Enhanced Voice Synthesis: Apple has updated Siri’s voice synthesis engine to deliver a more natural tone, making interactions feel less robotic.
  • Improved Error Handling: Siri now performs better when handling mispronunciations or garbled speech, adjusting to users who may accidentally stumble mid-query. For instance, saying, “What’s the weather in Spain, no I mean France,” should prompt Siri to focus on France.

While these additions improve the Siri experience, they don’t represent a major advancement in intelligence. Instead, they serve as initial enhancements leading up to more substantial updates scheduled for later releases.

Apple Intelligence Expands Siri’s Abilities

The current Apple Intelligence rollout makes Siri more responsive to device-specific questions about Apple products. Users can now ask Siri for guidance on using various features on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, with Siri providing step-by-step instructions from Apple’s official documentation. This enhancement makes Siri a more valuable resource for troubleshooting and learning Apple’s ecosystem.

As of iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence is available only in U.S. English, with more English variants arriving in iOS 18.2 and additional international language support planned for 2025. This phased language expansion ensures that a broader audience can benefit from Siri’s new features and Apple Intelligence’s support.

What to Expect in iOS 18.2: ChatGPT Integration and Beyond

The upcoming iOS 18.2 update, expected in December, brings the first significant upgrade to Siri’s intelligence by integrating ChatGPT. Once enabled, Siri will have the option to send queries it cannot answer directly to ChatGPT, improving its ability to respond to general knowledge questions and trivia.

Key highlights for iOS 18.2 include:

  • ChatGPT Integration: Siri will be able to use ChatGPT for complex questions, bypassing default web search results when it lacks a direct answer. Users can opt in to access this feature, with no paid ChatGPT subscription required.
  • Enhanced General Knowledge: The ChatGPT integration broadens Siri’s response options, allowing it to answer a wider range of questions that it might otherwise struggle with. This update makes Siri more versatile, particularly for trivia and fact-based queries.

This ChatGPT integration serves as a stepping stone toward transforming Siri into a more reliable and comprehensive assistant.

iOS 18.4 and Personal Context: A Big Leap for Siri

Looking ahead, Apple is planning a major Siri update as part of iOS 18.4, rumored for release in spring. This update aims to equip Siri with contextual understanding, enabling it to answer personalized questions based on the user’s data, such as emails, messages, and calendar events.

Expected upgrades in iOS 18.4:

  • Personal Context Awareness: Siri will gain the ability to answer questions about specific events, contacts, and reminders stored on the user’s device. For instance, asking “When is my flight?” or “What book did Jane recommend?” will prompt Siri to look through relevant data on the device to deliver an answer.
  • In-App Actions: Siri will have expanded functionality within apps, allowing users to perform specific tasks with voice commands. For example, in the Photos app, saying “make it pop” will trigger photo editing adjustments.
  • Onscreen Awareness: Siri will become more capable of responding to context-specific commands, such as “call the restaurant” when viewing a message with reservation details in the Messages app. This improvement will allow Siri to pull relevant information from the screen and perform related tasks seamlessly.

These additions bring Siri closer to providing the personalized, proactive assistance many users expect from a modern voice assistant.

Managing Expectations: Siri’s Current Limitations

While Apple’s recent updates add functionality and visual enhancements to Siri, it’s essential for users to manage their expectations. Despite the visual redesign and upcoming integration with ChatGPT, Siri still lacks the conversational AI depth of dedicated chatbots. Additionally, while the personal context feature in iOS 18.4 represents a significant improvement, Siri will remain limited in certain areas.

Notably, complex tasks like controlling multiple HomeKit accessories in a single command are still beyond Siri’s current capabilities, even with the planned updates. Apple’s advertising may have set higher expectations, leading some users to anticipate features that aren’t yet available. The new Type to Siri interface, while inviting, may further suggest chatbot-like interactions that Siri isn’t yet equipped to handle.

Siri’s Path Forward

Apple’s updates to Siri show promise, with a polished new design, ChatGPT integration on the horizon, and personalized context-based interactions arriving in the spring. While these changes make Siri more versatile and visually appealing, there’s still room for growth in terms of functionality and AI depth. Apple’s phased rollout suggests a measured approach, allowing users to experience incremental improvements over time.

For now, Siri’s new look and feel are setting the stage for more meaningful advancements. With the next few updates, Apple is working toward making Siri not only a smarter assistant but a more intuitive one that can interact with your digital life in meaningful ways.
