iOS 26.3 Released: New Android Transfer Tool, Privacy Controls, and EU Interoperability Features

Apple has released iOS 26.3 to iPhone users worldwide, delivering a substantial update focused on device interoperability, enhanced privacy controls, and expanded features for European Union users. The update includes a collaborative effort with Google to simplify platform switching, new location privacy options, and security patches addressing more than 35 vulnerabilities.

Android Transfer System Marks New Era of Platform Interoperability

The headline feature in iOS 26.3 is a new “Transfer to Android” system developed jointly by Apple and Google. This wireless transfer tool allows iPhone users to migrate photos, messages, notes, apps, and their phone number to an Android device by simply placing the two devices next to each other.

According to Apple’s implementation, users initiate the process through the Settings app, where the system guides them to position their Android device near the iPhone to establish a connection. Once paired, the transfer proceeds wirelessly without requiring cables or third-party software.

Limitations and Future Expansion

Apple has confirmed that certain sensitive data types are excluded from the transfer process, including Health data, Bluetooth device pairings, and locked notes. Both Apple and Google have indicated that additional data types will be added as the feature continues development across both platforms.

A corresponding feature for transferring from Android to iPhone is reportedly in testing through the latest Android beta releases, suggesting a reciprocal implementation is expected in the near future.

New Privacy Feature Limits Carrier Location Access

iOS 26.3 introduces a “limit precise location” privacy control that restricts the granularity of location data cellular networks can access. When enabled, carriers may only be able to determine the general neighborhood where a device is located rather than a specific address.

This feature has specific hardware and carrier requirements. Compatible devices include the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and iPad Pro with M5 chip and cellular connectivity. Supported carriers at launch include Telekom in Germany, EE and BT in the United Kingdom, Boost Mobile in the United States, and AIS and True in Thailand.

Users can access the toggle by navigating to Settings, selecting Cellular, and then tapping Cellular Data Options.

EU Compliance Brings Expanded Device Integration

In response to Digital Markets Act requirements, iOS 26.3 delivers several interoperability features for European users. These include proximity pairing capabilities similar to AirPods functionality for third-party accessories, expanded NFC features enabling iPhones to initiate actions on connected devices without being physically present, and high-bandwidth Wi-Fi connections for peer-to-peer use.

The European Commission released a statement welcoming these updates, noting that the features are expected to be fully available across Europe throughout 2026. The Commission characterized the changes as steps toward a more interconnected digital ecosystem benefiting EU citizens.

One anticipated feature, Notification Forwarding for third-party devices, was present in beta versions but did not appear in the final iOS 26.3 release. Apple has not commented on whether this capability will arrive in a future update.

Wallpaper Organization and Security Patches

Apple has reorganized the wallpaper selection interface, splitting the previously combined Weather and Astronomy category into two distinct sections. The actual wallpaper designs remain unchanged, though Apple has added several new pre-built options in the Weather category. Weather wallpapers display live conditions for the user’s current location, while Astronomy wallpapers show astronomical positioning of Earth or the Solar System.

The update also addresses significant security concerns, patching more than 35 vulnerabilities. Apple confirmed that at least one of these security issues was actively exploited before the patch was released, making the update particularly important for user security.

FAQ

Q: Can I transfer all my iPhone data to an Android device using iOS 26.3?

A: No. The Transfer to Android feature supports photos, messages, notes, apps, and your phone number, but excludes Health data, Bluetooth device pairings, locked notes, and some other sensitive information. Apple and Google have indicated more data types may be supported in future updates.

Q: Is the location privacy feature available on all iPhones?

A: No. The “limit precise location” feature requires an iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, or iPad Pro with M5 chip and cellular connectivity. It also requires a supported carrier, which currently includes select carriers in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Thailand.

Q: Are the EU interoperability features available outside Europe?

A: Apple has not confirmed whether features developed for EU compliance will be available in other regions. The high-bandwidth Wi-Fi connection capability is reportedly being used for the Android transfer feature globally, but other EU-specific features may remain region-locked.

MacReview Verdict

iOS 26.3 represents a pragmatic update that prioritizes interoperability and user control over flashy new features. The Android transfer tool, developed in collaboration with Google, signals a meaningful shift in how Apple approaches platform boundaries, even if the implementation remains limited in scope for now. Privacy-conscious users will appreciate the carrier location controls, though the feature’s limited device and carrier support restricts its immediate utility.

For European users, the update delivers substantive progress toward Digital Markets Act compliance, though the absence of Notification Forwarding from the final release suggests Apple is taking a measured approach to implementing these changes. The security patches alone make this update essential, particularly given Apple’s confirmation of active exploits. Users should install iOS 26.3 promptly through Settings, General, and Software Update.
