Review Summary:

PROS: Quality made. Fast and effortless photo import. Several hidden features. Affordable. CONS: None really.

I am sure you’re aware that Apple sells a lot of different adapters, so it’s not that surprising to know that most people aren’t very interested in learning what all these adapters are designed to do. For example, when I hear the word “adapter”, I always think of some kind of connection used to bridge two devices together, so in case I need to connect my digital camera to my iPad I’ll try to find the correct one only in case I really need it. What I am trying to say is that it would be very helpful to know what all of these adapters are designed for, since you can be very surprised by their capabilities and you can save yourself some money and time by exactly knowing what kind of adapter you actually need.

In today’s article we’ll talk about the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, made and sold by Apple. This adapter is priced at $29, and you can purchase it from the Apple online store. I decided to review and tell you more about this particular adapter, since many people don’t understand what this adapter is designed to do. Also, even though its name is pretty much self-explanatory, there are some other ways that you can use this product.

Apple Adapter 1

In case you decide to order the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, you’ll receive the adapter in a small box, along with a user manual. Most people don’t read these manuals, so they end up wondering why their devices don’t work, so I would recommend at least taking a quick look into this one. Speaking of this adapter, you’ll receive a small cable where on one end you’ll get the Lightning plug, while on the other end you’ll see the USB input.

The primary role of this adapter is to import pictures into your iPad from your digital camera. Most cameras should work, and all you have to do is to power on your camera and pictures will pop up on your iPad. Even though many cameras will work, I would recommend finding out if a particular camera model is supported, simply to avoid wasting time and money.

As I said earlier, this adapter could be used in some other “unofficial” ways. For example, you can transfer pictures from an iPhone to your iPad, so you edit your pictures on the big touchscreen. On the other hand, you won’t be able to transfer those pictures back, since iPhone can’t import pictures this way. You can also use some USB flash drives, and even external hard drives to import pictures, but you won’t be able to do the same with video files. I also need to say that you’ll be able to use some microphones, so you can easily make voice recordings and edit podcasts using your iPad, which means that you’ll be able to work with Apple’s GarageBand, for example.

What’s important to know is that you can freely explore and plug-in all kinds of USB peripherals. In case your iPad isn’t compatible with a specific USB device, you’ll receive a notification saying that the connected device requires too much power. This means that you can’t actually harm your tablet.

In case you’re only using the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter for its primary role, you’ll be able to import photos and use simple USB input devices like simple microphone models. In case you’ve got a powered USB hub which works as a link in this chain, you’ll be able to use wide range of USB devices, which can greatly expand capabilities of this product.
