Review Summary:

Pros: Very affordable. Reasonably quick to print. Supports Apple’s AirPrint.
Cons: Slow with photo printing. High costs per page.

Almost every respectable company, specialized in printer manufacturing, offers a set of low-cost printing solution. This goes for HP, Lexmark, Epson, Kodak and many others. These printers are quite affordable, where all of them are under $100, which makes them perfect for homes and small offices. Decision to create low-budget printers was a very profitable one, since these printers are very popular with consumers and they tend to sell out very quickly. It is also clear how much these printers are popular by looking at a speed of introducing next generation which usually offers some improvement by keeping the same affordable price.

In this review we are bringing you Epson’s low-budget printer, called Expression Home XP400 “Small-in-one”. It costs $100 and is able to print and copy documents and photos, and scan them as well. XP400 could be considered as a next generation of Epson’s NX430 printer, and it brings some of the much needed improvements, by keeping the same price.

XP400 is a very small and compact printer, just like you would expect from a low-cost category. Its dimensions are 5.4 by 15.4 by 11.8 inches (13.7 by 39.1 by 29.9 centimeters) and weighs only 9 pounds (4 kilograms). It has ability to store 100 sheets of paper, but it doesn’t feature duplexer used to print on both sides of paper, so you will have to this manually. Also, it needs four individual ink tanks.

This printer also features a small LED screen using which you can access some of the options like Setup, Help, Wi-Fi Setup, Copy, Print Photos, Scan and much more. As you can see, XP400 supports Wi-Fi connectivity, which is a nice touch for this type of home printer. It also supports Apple’s AirPrint technology which you’ll surely appreciate in case you’re using iPhone or iPad. You can connect it with your computer via USB as well.

Speaking of its performance, XP400 brings significant improvement over the previous generation. It has the ability to print 3.1 pages per minute, which is standard for this category of printers. In comparison, previous generation gave a result of 1.7 pages per minute. You should also know that for this type of printer you can expect a speed of 3ppm up to 4.5ppm. Since it also prints photos, you can expect much more prolonged times, since it needs 2.2 minutes to print a standard photo size, which is quite slow for this category.

Still, print quality is nice for a small home inkjet printer. This means that you can use it for a wide range of home and school projects, but you might want to employ a better printing solution for a business documents, for example. Also, photo quality is standard for inkjet technology. Colors are vibrant and true, somewhat light on some sections.

Finally, it is important to say how much it would cost to print a page on Epson’s XP400. Even though this is very affordable printer, costs for one page are quite high are they are up to 6 cents for monochromatic page and 16.7 cents for color pages. This means that your investment will be low in the beginning, but you will give more money down the road.
